Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Published on Thursday, January 27, 2022

Emphasizing and supporting diversity has been a longtime commitment for the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Department recently formalized its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) through the creation of a Vice Chair of DEI. In 2021, the newly appointed Vice Chair of DEI, Dr. Erin Dehon, in collaboration with the DEI Committee, created the department’s first DEI strategic plan which integrates DEI work across all academic missions – education, research, and health care. This work includes implementing strategies to reduce health disparities and engaging in outreach to underserved communities. The DEI Committee also launched initiatives that gained recognition across the institution. The “All are Welcome Here” sign now seen throughout the hospital and on billboards around the Jackson area, was the brainchild of this committee.

Committee Members include: Drs. Baba Adeyemi (PGY-3), Bridget Cheng (PGY-3), Denise Cornelius, Jim Galbraith, Jonah Gunalda, Loretta Jackson, Chris McCuller (PGY-2), Risa Moriarity, Utsav Nandi, Ariel Noble (PGY-1), Benjamin Parva (PGY-3), Sarah Smudde (PGY-1), Sarah Sterling, Brent Treadway (PGY-3), Laura Vearrier, and Trey Wofford.
